ABOUT SAM
SAM:
Susan A.
McNelley, RN, PHN, MA
I
am a retired public health nurse who has worked in public and
community health in Monterey County for more than thirty years. My
experience includes
work as:
- Volunteer with Gathering for Women, a day center for homeless women living on the Monterey Peninsula
- Commissioner, District 5, Community Action Commission, Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services
- Perinatal
Services
Coordinator and Field Nurse with the Monterey County Health Department;
- School
Readiness Coordinator
and Parents as Teachers Supervisor at Cabrillo Family Resource Center/
Monterey Peninsula Unified School District;
- Nurse
Consultant for the
Monterey County MCSTART program, addressing Perinatal Substance Abuse;
- Nurse/
Activity Director in
an Adult Day Care Program for Frail Seniors with the Monterey Peninsula
Salvation Army;
- Field Nurse with the
Visiting Nurses Association.
In
all of
these positions I have understood the importance
of contact and collaboration with community resources. The
needs of families, particularly at-risk
families, are multi-factorial and complex.
No one person or one agency can address all of the needs. For
this reason, I have always used resource
guides and lists. When I couldn’t find
appropriate material, I developed my own guides. In 2005, I
compiled the first SAM’s GUIDE to Monterey
County Family Resources. The SAM's Guide, February 2019 is the 9th and final edition of the guide.
